KUCHING (Aug 1): The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) blood bank only has half its usual supply of Type O blood.

Medical laboratory technician Laurence Lim called on eligible donors to urgently come forward to replenish the blood stock.

“We currently have about 50 pints of Type O, but usually we try to keep 100 pints per day.

“We are running low for Type O, and need to replenish as soon as possible to maintain the stock level,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Lim said the blood bank did not receive enough donations during Ramadan, resulting in the Type O shortage.

Although the blood bank receives donors on a daily basis, Lim said the number had dropped drastically before and during festive season.

“Before and during Raya Aidilfitri, we usually do not get many donors.

“During the fasting month, we saw a drop of 30 to 40 per cent in blood donations,” he said.

“Type B is slightly down with 60 per cent in stock now.

“The rest are okay, but we do need to replenish Type O as soon as possible.”

Lim pointed out that the blood bank has reserved parking bays within the SGH compound for blood donors.

The blood bank will hold three donation campaigns this weekend.

Tomorrow a blood drive will be held at Boulevard Shopping Mall from 10am to 3pm and again on Sunday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

There will also be a blood drive at The Hills Shopping Mall on Sunday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
